I have a new puppy and this is my first time as a dog mommy...so I want to do things right.
How often should I be bathing him? I've heard that if you bathe too much he could get dry skin and other non-fun skin issues. Additionally, any recommendations on shampoos?
How often should I be clipping his nails...he had them clipped at the kennel 3 weeks ago and it already feels a bit scratchy when he jumps on me (we're working on that) but I don't want to clip them too early either.
Lastly, he has slightly droopy ears (he's part lab/jack russell) and I'm not sure how to go about cleaning his ears either. Any advice?

Dogs don't need to be bathed as much as people think. the max he should be bathed is once a month, normally though, he should only get baths when he needs one (begins to smell bad, not just doggie. Covered in mud, or begins to looks dirty). Too much and it will dry out his skin.
1My fav shampoo on my last few dog has been TropiClean in Papaya Plus. Its all natural and smells like subtle pina-colada. you don't want to get anything too strongly scented because it will irritate his nose. My dogs on average only got bathed a few times a year, and all the water hose-downs they wanted during the summer months.
for me, the key to remember is that a dog isn't supposed to smell like baby powder, or candy or flowers 24/7. They should have a natural "doggie" smell. When they stink, yepper its bathtime!
Also, about the ears. Since it is your first pup I would purchase an ear-cleaning solution and have the vet show you how to properly cleanse them. For more casual cleansing, a damp washcloth (no soap!) can be used to clean out the outer layers of the ears (never use Q-tips or try to get "into" the ear to clean it because you could do more damage than good). I like the stuff Halo for Pets puts out because its all natural.
2For the nails, I'd recommend having a vet or an experinced pet owner (people who have owned dogs before that KNOW what they're doing when clipping nails), or even a groomer show you how to clip the pup's nails. If you clip them too short, you could cut into their quick, which hurts a LOT.
Another tip about clipping nails, I've heard that if you handle your pup's paws a lot while they're young, they'll be OK with you clipping their nails. They might not enjoy it, but they'll be OK with you handling their paws because you did it often when they were pups.
As for how often....I can't give you any advice on that, since I've never clipped my dogs' nails...it was always my mother or brother that did it.
